Where is chromium in glass from?
Chrominum in glass is produced by adding chrominum compounds.
We can add chrominum compounds as pigment into glass. For example adding chromite flour(main component is Cr2O3) to make green glass;adding CrO3 to make red glass.
The adding amount of chrominum compounds decides the color saturation.
Before the traditional added chrominum compounds in glass are chrome green, sodium dichromate, potassium dichromate etc,but at present,we use chromite flour instead of those traditional chrominum compounds, which can reduce cost and improve production efficiency.
Why chromite flour can be added in glass as colorant widely, except its chrominum,it also has the following properties:
– Stable at high temperatures
– Thermal-shock resistant
– Resistant to corrosive glasses and slags
– High heat resistance
