Amazing Applications of chromite sand in casting
1.“beautician” of casting surface
Chromite sand acts like an invisible armor for castings. Its regular particle shape and high hardness allow it to form a dense layer on the mold surface, resulting in a smooth and glossy finish after demolding. Experimental data shows that castings using chromite sand can have their surface roughness reduced by 30%, even eliminating the need for subsequent polishing. Even better, it effectively prevents molten metal penetration, avoiding the annoying sand-adhesion defect.
2.“Special forces soldiers :on the high-temperature field
While ordinary molding sand crumbles at high temperatures, chromite sand remains remarkably stable. Its refractoriness reaches 1900℃, more than 500℃ higher than that of quartz sand, making it particularly suitable for casting high-melting-point alloys such as stainless steel. At the moment of pouring, it forms a stable thermal barrier layer, protecting the mold from burn-through and allowing the molten metal to solidify smoothly, reducing porosity and shrinkage.
3.“Commander” of the Metal Flow
Chromite sand has a thermal conductivity 2-3 times that of ordinary molding sand, making it an excellent tool for controlling the solidification rhythm of metals. It quickly dissipates excess heat, preventing localized overheating and deformation of castings while promoting sequential solidification. Even more remarkably, its coefficient of thermal expansion is almost zero, resulting in rock-solid mold dimensions and making dimensional tolerance control of complex and precision castings effortless.
