Advantages of South Africa Chromite sand
The main advantages of South African chromite sand (especially foundry grade) stem from its high grade, stable composition, and excellent physical properties, primarily reflected in its refractoriness, thermal conductivity, anti-adhesion properties, and dimensional stability.
High Cr₂O₃ and high chromium-to-ferrochrome ratio (Cr/Fe ≈ 1.55:1): Typically, Cr₂O₃ ≥46% and SiO₂ ≤1.0%, with fewer impurities and higher purity, improving refractoriness (melting point ≈2180°C, sintering point >1800°C), making it suitable for smelting high-end castings such as stainless steel and high alloy steel.
Excellent thermal conductivity (far more than several times that of silica sand): Accelerates cooling of castings, refines grains, improves mechanical properties, can partially replace cold iron, and promotes directional solidification.
Strong resistance to alkaline slag and chemical inertness: It does not react with molten metal oxides such as iron oxide, effectively preventing thermochemical sand adhesion; solid-phase sintering occurs at high temperatures, sealing pores, blocking the penetration of molten metal, and reducing mechanical sand adhesion.
Low coefficient of thermal expansion and stable volume under heat: significantly reduces defects such as sand expansion, veins, and sand inclusions, ensuring dimensional accuracy of large/thick-walled castings.
Regular particle shape and controllable gradation: Natural spinel has a dense structure and high hardness (Mohs 5.5–6.5). It is suitable for casting surface sand, coating aggregates and drainage sand, taking into account both air permeability and molding sand strength.
Environmental protection and operability advantages: no free silica dust hazard (compared to quartz sand), neutral to weakly alkaline (pH 7–9), compatible with a variety of binder systems (such as furan, water glass resin).
